Abstract
The Solenostemma argel (Del. Hayne) Leaves Aqueous Extract was tested for a possible biological activity including metabolic, toxicological , antitumor , analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial , in addition to its effects as anti-angiogenic (vascular endothelial growth factor, VEGF) and anti-apoptotic (bcl-2 and p53 proteins). The results showed a significant decrease in serum glucose (P<0.05) two days after administration of 5% of the L.D50, whereas both 10% and 20% levels showed a significant decrease one day after the treatment. Serum levels of transaminases (AST and ALT) showed significant increase (P<0.05) two days after the treatment with 5% of the L.D50. Serum bilirubin showed a significant increase (P<0.05) two day after the treatment with 5% of the L.D50 and one days after the treatment with 10% and 20% of the L.D50. Serum urea and creatinine levels revealed a slight increase two days after (5, 10 and 20%) of LD50 administration. The analgesic activity of the extract was measured using three different concentrations (5, 10 and 20%) and the results were significantly increase (P<0.005). Also, the present study also showed not only that the three concentration levels could protect rats from carrageenan induced inflammation but also has more potent effect than diclofenac. The antiangiogenic and antiapoptotic effects of the extract were indicated by the highly significant (P<0.001) increase in p53 protein levels in the liver homogenate from the second month till the end of experimental period, and the highly significant (P<0.001) decrease in both bcl-2 in the liver homogenate and VEGF in plasma.
